Our summer jamborees continued to take the EIHA Stanley cup around the country, with two more fantastic events taking place last weekend.
The action came on Saturday at the Skydome in Coventry, and on Sunday at Planet Ice Peterborough.
Saturday’s event was held for the older age groups, and it was a pleasure to have the players on show entertain the crowds with some fast hockey, end-to-end games, and plenty of late drama to endure.
The event consisted of players from last year U12s through to U18s, who travelled from as far south as Solent all the way up to Blackburn to attend the event.
The action was quite evenly balanced and each fixture was close, but with the last game taking place between the Oilers and Rangers to determine who took the spoils in the group stages, only a piece of brilliance could separate them, with the Oilers winning the groups thanks to a 4-3 victory.
This helped finalise the semi-finals, and the Oilers had a tough game against Coyotes. However, the group winners scrapped through with a 4-3 win.
In the other semi, the Bruins turned the tables on an earlier 3-0 defeat to the table runners-up, overcoming the Rangers via a 3-2 scoreline.
In another hotly-contested match in the final, the Oilers led the way with a slender lead going into the final shift. With the Bruins pushing for an equaliser, it was their opponents who broke away and finished top shelf against a deflated netminder who did all he could to keep the shot out. His efforts were to no avail as the Oilers were 4-2 victors, rounding off a dominant day’s performance.
On Sunday, the summer jamboree action came from Peterborough, with U10s/12s action coming to the fore.
With over 70 players participating, the games were a joy to watch, especially as some players experienced their first games for either club or jamboree team – you could tell by the end of the day, with their smiles on display, how much they enjoyed it.
This weekend, Danny Perchard took over the event management of the jamborees, and the teams were well balanced on paper.
At the halfway stage of the round robin event, the Rangers led the event by a couple of points. At the other end of the table, the Oilers had a tough few games and were unlucky to lose all four of their games.
However after the second set of round robin games, a change of fortune, a new coach and a player swap, the Oilers were extremely unlucky to miss out on a semi-final berth by goal difference alone, despite winning three of their next four games.
Winners of the round robin stage were the Bruins, who finished on 18 points – one ahead of both the Kings and Rangers. The other team making it to the final four were the Sharks.
Onto the semi-finals, which were entertaining affairs as the Bruins cruised into the final with a 10-6 win over the Sharks.
The Rangers and Kings couldn’t be separated in regulation after both coaches and officials confirmed a 4-4 draw, so it went to penalties. Again they couldn’t be separated after four penalty spots each, but as the Rangers took a lead on penalty number five, their netminder saved the day and sent them through to the finals.
It was another fantastic game for Bruins, who showed why they won the round robin table in the winner-takes-all showdown. They exemplified their dominance with a 9-4 win to claim the Stanley Cup and earn themselves the chance to celebrate.
Overall, it was another fantastic weekend of action, with excellent attitude and effort shown by all those who participated in both Coventry and Peterborough.
We have just opened another event, this time at the recently refurbished Lee Valley rink on Saturday 26 August, starting at 2:30pm.
